Based in Northumberland, I work single-handedly to make contemporary furniture using traditional
techniques.
After a graduate career in aeronautical engineering, I decided to change direction and transfer my skills
in design and manufacture to making beautiful, functional furniture. Because of my previous experience, I
devised my own training scheme, tailored to my particular situation. Months of research using old books
and talking to retired craftsmen led to a thorough understanding of how furniture was made in the golden
ages of cabinetmaking when the beautiful antiques we all admire were constructed. Years of experimentation
and practice led on to the furniture you can see today on this website. My furniture is not reproduction
but is inspired by old designs. My interest in the history of British furniture and woodworking is
reflected in my membership of the
Regional Furniture Society and the
Tool and Trades History Society.
One of my lifelong interests has been in the natural world and I am very concerned with the preservation
of our environment. This is reflected in my interest in the use of wood from local and sustainable sources
and in making furniture that can be repaired and restored in the future rather than being thrown away.
An example of my work has been on display at the Chairs 2004 exhibition, at Westonbirt in Gloucestershire.
